Ménage à trois, vous allez?

My professor shared to us about her experiences during College; and we knew that her course requires her to master 2 foreign languages - and as for her, she mastered French and Bahasa Indonesia, so we asked her things about the two languages.

And as for me, I had been baffled that time with what ménage à trois meant. So, I saw this as a perfect opportunity to ask her with what it meant. So I asked, ‘So Ma’am, what does ménage à trois mean?’ and she gave me a shocked looked and said, ‘Why are you asking me that?

I took my personal hypothesis in my head (Which was, ménage à trois meant you can manage three persons in a relationship) and asked her again, ‘Ma’am, what does ménage à trois literally mean?’ (Hoping that she’ll answer me this time) And she gave me that annoyed look.

My girlfriend (Who happens to be my classmate) tried to signal me something, it was like more of a shut up or a stop talking signal. After class, she said, ‘Why did you ask about those?’ in an angry tone and I said this in reply, ‘I don’t know what it meant so I asked her.

She gave me that annoyed look too and said, ‘Ménage à trois meant threesome! Threesome in a pornographic way!’ I asked her back, ‘Diba it means you’re having two lovers at the same time?’ And clearly she gave me a no.

From that moment on when I reminisced that moment, I felt that I lost my sanity when I asked my professor that question. Or sort of, died from embarrassment.
